University of the Sea

The 2009 program for the University of the Sea / Université de la Mer has closed. The University of the Sea is a partnership between the University of Sydney, Intergovernmental ceanographic Commission of UNESCO & many other Universities & research centres in the Australasian & Indo-Pacific region. The University of the Sea is dedicated to building marine science capacity in the Asia Pacific region & aims to bring together senior researchers & young local scholars to address marine science issues of direct interest to their region. For more information, please contact Ms Edwina Tanner

27-28 April 2009

The first PACSWIN Submarine Cable Workshop is to be held in Pusan, Korea, 27-28 April, 2009. Dr John You, of the School of Geosciences and USIMS, is co-chair of the Organizing Committee for the workshop.

12-15 May 2009

On behalf of SEQ Catchments Ltd, an invitation is extended for you to attend the second Queensland Coastal Conference, to be held on the Gold Coast from 13-15 May, 2009 and the Queensland Coastal Councils Forum on 12 May 2009. After the resounding success of the inaugural Queensland Coastal Conference in 2007, the 2009 'Waves of Change' Queensland Coastal Conference is an opportunity to broaden your understanding of how management and planning of the Queensland coast is evolving.

The Queensland Coastal Conference 2009 is not just about learning of new developments in natural resource management, but will be a balanced discussion of practical, on-ground coastal management and the policies and programs that inform coastal zone management in Queensland. 5-9 July 2009

Australian Marine Science Association (AMSA) 2009 Marine Connectivity Conference. The conference will be held in Adelaide, South Australia from 5-9 July 2009 at the Adelaide Convention Centre, with the theme of Marine Connectivity.

The marine environment is multi-dimensional and highly complex, with processes interlinked across the oceans' spheres and constituents. Single-discipline approaches are increasingly coming to a limit in their power to explain processes and their implications. In recent years, more and more marine scientists have started to consider how organisms or chemicals are linked across habitats and scales. This conference will provide a forum to discuss the state of the art for investigating marine connectivity, novel approaches and technical advances, and the meaning of connectivity in the oceans and coastal seas.

The conference will address the "What", "Where & How" and "Why" of marine connectivity. Molecules, sediments and nutrients are transported and transformed by processes operating over various scales within the oceans. Marine organisms are dispersing or migrating in various life stages across interfaces or into adjacent habitats. Connectivity has implications for biogeographic distributions, resilience and resource management and protection. Further sessions will be dedicated to novel methods to study connectivity, and on improved networking of the scientific community. For more information visit http://www.amsaconference.com.au/.

3-6 November 2009

The 18th NSW Coastal Conference will take place in Ballina, on the mid north coast of NSW, 3-6 November 2009. For more information click here.

9 November 2009

One of the IMOS facilities e-Marine Information Infrastructure (eMII) are holding a Data User Workshop in Western Australia on Monday 9 November 2009 at the Novotel Manly Pacific commencing at 9am. The data user workshop aims to increase the awareness and use of the high quality IMOS data, facilitate communication within the marine science community and enable participants to examine practical examples of the data.

Within hands-on sessions participants will examine worked examples that utilise a number of data tools and illustrate data including Interrogation, Integration, Visualisation, and Interpretation.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring ideas of data they would like to discover and use.

To register for this event, please contact Kylie by email or by phone on 03 6226 7488. For more information please visit http://www.eresearch.edu.au/2009ws1.

May 2010

Oceans’10 Down Under will be held in Sydney in May 2010 and will showcase advances in marine science and engineering. Doug Cato, Ian Jones and Hugh Durrant-Whyte are all members of the steering committee. Please visit http://www.oceans10ieeesydney.org/.
